Sourcing Specialist


The Sourcing Specialist is responsible for establishing the sourcing strategy for their category area, ensuring a stable long term supply base is established and maintained.  They are responsible for transitioning of products from development to production.  They provide procurement and project management support to cross-functional new product development teams, working as the lead between the product development team, manufacturing engineering, global sourcing offices and suppliers. They negotiate and place new parts with suppliers in alignment with sourcing strategies, cost, quality and delivery objectives. They complete initial new product related purchasing orders and reports, and maintain files ensuring a smooth transition to replenishment buying team. They maintain supplier relationships, drive supplier development, supplier scorecards and issue management.



  • Actively participate on new product development teams to review product concepts for cost, supplier implementation schedule and suitability to the current supply base
  • Works closely with marketing and engineering to develop a strategic supply base for new products where none currently exists
  • Assumes responsibility for the effective performance of all supplier related functions:
    • Researches and locates vendors. Investigates and analyses the best sources of parts. Obtains comparative prices on a regular basis to ensure the best possible prices. Maintains current cost data for all purchased items.
    • Supports and drives the execution of global commodity strategies relative to cost reductions, Supplier Sourcing and Supplier Rationalization for assigned commodities.
    • Ensures that supplies and materials ordered meet established quality standards.
    • Assists in maintaining appropriate inventory levels.
  • Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining professional business relations with vendors.
    • Obtains and conveys information courteously and promptly.
    • Maintains and projects the Company’s professional reputation
    • Travels to suppliers on a regular basis to review business results and ensure smooth operations
  • Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining good communication, coordination, and working relations with Gerber personnel and management.
    • Interfaces with Research and Development, Sales, Supply Chain and Quality Assurance on new products and parts.
    • Keeps departments advised of key changes of schedule in materials due.
    • Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant problems. Provides suggestions for improved policies and procedures.



  • EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: BA in Supply Chain or related field. (Highly preferred) REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of vendor sources and products
  • Previous experience working with Asian suppliers. (highly preferred)
  • EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: 3-5 years of previous experience in a purchasing or sourcing, supporting a manufacturing environment preferred
  • Strong experience with project management
  • TRAVEL: Ability to travel domestically and internationally 15-20% of the time (must be able to acquire a US Passport company will pay for this expense)
